When do you need a HERS test?

In California, replacing or installing any part of an HVAC system — ducts, condenser, furnace, or air handler — triggers a HERS verification before the permit can be finaled. A certified rater has to test the work independently and register the results.

Our technician performs the required tests on site, usually in 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the system. Not every test applies to every job; some are exempt based on the scope and existing conditions, and we'll tell you which ones apply before we come out.

What's in the report

  • Duct leakage testMeasures how much conditioned air escapes the duct system, unless the job is exempt.
  • Airflow measurementConfirms the system moves enough air across the coil.
  • Fan watt drawVerifies the blower isn't drawing more power than the code allows.
  • Refrigerant charge verificationChecks the charge is within spec on applicable systems.
  • CF-2R and CF-3R formsCompleted, registered, and delivered to you and the homeowner.

Who we work with

Contractors

You need the test done when you say it will be done, by someone who won't embarrass you in front of your customer. We show up on schedule, keep the homeowner informed, and get the paperwork registered before your inspection date. Volume and repeat-account pricing available.

Homeowners

If your contractor told you a HERS test is required, or the city won't final your permit without one, call us directly. We'll explain what the test covers, what it costs, and what happens after — no jargon and no runaround.

Common questions

How fast can you come out?

In most of our service area we can schedule same-day or next-day. Call in the morning and there's a good chance we can be there before the end of the day.

How long does the test take?

Usually 30 minutes to 2 hours on site, depending on the system and how many tests apply. We stay until it's done properly.

What happens if the system fails?

You get the readings and we tell you exactly what's out of range. Once your contractor corrects it, we come back and retest so the job can be finaled.

Do you file the CF-2R and CF-3R forms?

Yes. We complete and register them with the rating provider and send copies to you, the homeowner, and the inspector as needed.

Can you pull the permit too?

Yes — HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. Give us the job details and we'll handle the application and follow it through to sign-off.

What does it cost?

It depends on the scope, the number of systems, and your location. Send the form below with a short description of the job and you'll get a real number back, not a range.
